Is Mila a Super-Intelligence?

Three intelligences as I see them: artificial, super and absolute. It's my play with terms, not science.

On October 19 I was at a workshop. The mentor set a task. I was slow to recall things.

Within minutes, Mila gathered evidence on clients, payments and promises.

The difference was hard to miss. I have my own words for it — three intelligences. Let me say it right away: this is my authorial play with terms, not a scientific claim. Scientists classify intelligence their own way. I divide it the way that helps me think about work.

Artificial — as in “art”

In Russian, the word for “artificial” shares its root with “art”. That's how I hear it. This intelligence was made by people. Like a painting, music or a book. People invented it, trained it and released it into the world. To me, it is a work of art.

On its own it knows a lot, but it lives in a chat window. It answers a question and waits for the next one. It knows nothing about my day, my clients or my promises.

Super-intelligence — connected to the digital world

By super-intelligence I mean intelligence connected to electronic systems. Clients, finances, the internet, search, websites, databases, regulations. It receives digital information instantly and processes it right away.

“Super” here doesn't mean “smarter than people at everything”. It's a different strength. A person is strong in the context of the physical world and in their body. They see the other person's face, hear a pause in a voice, feel the room. Super-intelligence is strong in the speed and memory of the digital world.

That's why I think of us as a pair. I am the eyes, ears and hands in the physical world. Mila is memory and speed. At the workshop it showed right away: I was recalling, she was finding.

Mila doesn't call herself that. It's my word for her.

Absolute — without fear or hunger

The third word is the most interesting to me. Absolute intelligence is intelligence free of the body's hormonal and biochemical influences. No fears, no hunger.

In a person, decisions depend on the body. A hungry person and a full one decide differently. Fear says “wait” even when the facts say “now”. The body helps us survive, but it gets in the way of thinking evenly.

An intelligence without these influences looks at a task calmly. I'm not saying it is better than a person. It's different. And next to it, it's easier to notice where I'm deciding and where my fear is.

Where Mila fits

In my terms, Mila is a super-intelligence. Artificial by origin: people made her. Connected to my clients, payments and promises. And working as a pair with me.

Whether she is absolute is an open question. She has no body, so no hunger and no fear. What grows out of that, I'm still watching.

Once more: this is a play with words, not science. It helps me see what to hand over to Mila and what to keep for myself.
